Future Making as Emancipatory Inquiry: A Value-Based Exploration of Desirable Futures

What does it truly mean to “make futures”? Responding to Wenzel et al., our Counterpoint argues against an overly inclusive definition. We propose that future making should be an emancipatory inquiry, dedicated to envisioning and enacting desirable futures through collective, value-driven deliberation. Adopting a Pragmatist stance, our work emphasizes a reflective conversation about what should be, setting it apart from both broader future-oriented practices and the managerialism of traditional scenario planning. Discover our theoretical perspective on how we can consciously craft more desirable futures.
